The Regal nameplate was introduced by Buick in 1973 as a mid-priced, personal luxury coupe. It soon became one of Buick’s best-selling vehicles.
A sedan was added to the offerings in 1974. The car’s first re-design was for the 1978 model year.
The 1987 Regal was available in three models: the base Regal, the Limited, and the Grand National.
The Grand National was equipped with a turbocharger and intercooler with sequential-port fuel injection (SFI). It was one of the fastest cars built in the U. S. They also had a blacked-out exterior, Gran Touring suspension, power steering, power-assisted low-drag front disc brakes, and an automatic transmission with overdrive.
The turbocharged SFI engine was developed by Buick and Bosch of Germany. It injected precisely timed and metered fuel directly into the cylinders. An intercooler system helped cool the pressurized air charge from the turbocharger to the engine.
1987 was the final year for the Grand National.
It could go from 0 – 60 in 6.1 seconds and had a quarter-mile time of 99.2 mph.
