Mr. Swinney bought this car for $195 in 1944 when he was 17 years old and owned it for 75 years. He quit driving it in the 80’s. It was restored by Rezurrected Rod & Kustom in Wayne, NE. Special features include the wood grain dash and re-chromed grille. It has won awards and trophies at several car shows.
The Model 48 updated Ford’s Model 40A, the mainstay of the company’s products. Fords had a combination of price, practicality and looks that enabled the company to sell 820,000 cars in 1935, more than rival Chevrolet.
Styling changes were made to Ford models in 1935.
The grille on 1935 Fords was pushed forward to give the car a more modern and prominent look. The 1935 models were lower and more streamlined in appearance. Fenders were more rounded and the windshield was more sloped.
Available models included the Tudor and Fordor sedans, a five-window coupe, the three-window coupe, a convertible, woody station wagon, roadster and a truck. Rumble seats were optional on coupe models. The three-window coupe was designed as a more affordable option in the difficult automobile market of the Depression.
In a major advance, Ford offered a built-in trunk on its sedans and all Fords had front-hinged doors. The true integrated trunk on “trunkback” sedans was new but the traditional “flatback” was still available.
Standard and Deluxe trim levels were available across the model lines. An optional oil pressure gauge (extra $4) and two windshield wipers were available. If a radio was ordered, it replaced the ash tray.
